Leben im ausgehenden Anthropozän?
Der Paläoklimatologe William Ruddiman vertritt die These, dass die Menschheit bereits durch den Übergang zur Viehzucht und Ackerbau vor ca. acht Jahrtausenden erstmalig in das Klima der Erde eingegriffen hat. Sicherlich ein folgenreicher, aber vorerst noch relativ harmloser Schritt in der Geschichte des Homo sapiens.
Erst seit Beginn der industriellen Revolution sind Eingriffe des Menschen in die Natur immer schwindelerregender und er selbst (bzw. seine sich von der europäischen Halbinsel auf die Erdkugel verbreitete industriell-kapitalistische Variante) dominanter Faktor im Ökosystem geworden. Sein Einfluss in diesem neuen Zeitalter – dem Anthropozän – ist bisweilen katastrophal.
Und er begrenzt sich längst nicht auf’s Klima: Verpestung der Meere, Verwüstung ganzer Landstriche, tausendfache Ausrottung kompletter Spezies folgen im schnellen Takt rücksichtsloser Beutezüge unter der Marschmusik des geheiligten "Wirtschaftswachstums". Doch es herrscht Apokalypsenblindheit.
Obwohl menschenverursachte Katastrophen profitsüchtiger Kurzsichtigkeit in immer kürzer werdenden Abständen, in einer verheerenderen Gewaltigkeit über den Planeten hineinbrechen, halten wir an einer längst widerlegten Illusion fest: Unaufhaltsamer Fortschritt wird die Erde uns Untertan machen.
Diese Hybris kommt der Natur teuer zu stehen: Allein durch die Ölpest von Deepwater Horizon (Erinnern Sie sich? British Petrol wollte vergangenes Jahr auch noch in 1,5 km Meerestiefe Erdöl bohren) sind im Golf von Mexiko 400 Arten akut vom Aussterben bedroht. Doch der Glaube an uns und unsere Teufelstechnologien scheint ungebrochen. Unabhängig davon, wie sehr sich die Hiobsbotschaften auch mehren.
Atomkraft ist eine weitere dieser Teufelstechnologien. Zahlreiche Vorfälle (von Windscale über Three Mile Island und Forsmark, nicht zu vergessen der tatsächlich eingetretene und unermesslich lethale Super-GAU von Tschernobyl), sollten uns längst belehrt haben: Diese Technologie ist weder beherrschbar, noch sind ihre Folgen absehbar. Nicht nur jene, die durch den tödlichen Abfall noch auf Jahrtausende fortbestehen.
Mit Japan wurde am 11. März ein hochindustrialisiertes Land von einem Beben getroffen, welches uns erneut eindringlich vor Augen führt, dass ein Leben gegen die Natur selbstmörderisch ist.
Straßen, Gebäude, Brücken wurden wie Kartenhäuser vom Tsunami weggefegt, Raffinerien wie Streichhölzer in Brand gesteckt. Aber auch zwei Atom-Reaktoren laufen zur Zeit Gefahr, in hohen Mengen radioaktive Strahlung abzugeben. Noch ist nicht geklärt, wie schlimm das Ausmaß dieser jüngsten Atomkatastrope ist, doch schon wird vielerorts abgewiegelt: Alles halb so schlimm. Ein wenig heiße, radioaktive Luft und das war’s. Es erinnert an den Mann, der aus dem Fenster springt und – während er fällt – immer wieder sagt: "Bis hierin war’s nicht so schlimm."
